For LAC runners looking to burn off some of the calories gained through festive feasting, there were a number of opportunities for racing or running for fun this week.
Christmas morning saw 406 runners take part in a parkrun at Cramond. With the majority of runners in fancy dress, it was certainly an unusual start to Christmas day to see numerous Santas, Elves, Christmas jumpers, tinsel and fairy lights, not forgetting a Christmas tree, running along the promenade to Silverknowes. Representing Linlithgow AC, Charlotte Fortune finished as 3rd Female in a time of 20:39. Also running was Hilary Stocks (20th F in a time of 23:16), Frances Wood (28th F in a time of 23:38) and Jennifer Newton (44th F in a time of 25:36).
Boxing Day saw the annual Festive Handicap race at Beecraigs. Organised by Lothian running club, entrants choose between distances of 7 or 14km (approx), with handicapped times calculated based on other recent races. The route was revised slightly this year due to recent storm damage and consisted of one (or two) loops through Beecraigs, around the loch, up the sawmill hill and along to Balvormie before the final climb up and down Cockleroy to the finish line. Thankfully the weather was dry and settled, one of the few days this month where it was pleasant to be outside. As a result, there were many local runners in the 160 strong field, and a good number of children took part in the junior fun run up Cockleroy.
Representing LAC in the handicap race, Jennifer Newton finished 7th (7km), closely followed by Shirley Hyslop in 12th (7km). Also running were Roddy Simpson (27th/7k), Andrew Fischbacher (44th/7k), Paul Dudchenko (61st/14k), Scott Hyslop (64th/14k), Colin McCluskie (67th/14k), Doug Roberston (71st/14k), Brian Couper (75th/7k), Frances Wood (77th/7k), Bryan Grome (79th/7k), Lynne McGill (107th/7k). Full results can be found on the Lothian website.
Also on Boxing Day, Darren Dick travelled to Ayr to take part in the Turkey Trot 10k race. On a sunny day (albeit with a gentle breeze) Darren took full advantage of the flat course to set a new PB, finishing 119th in a time of 44:09.
Finally, there was a good club turnout at Falkirk parkrun on Saturday. Charly finished as 1st Female (14th overall) in a time of 20:04, and Brian Couper and Darren Dick gained their final PBs for the year. The full results are as follows:
Charlotte Fortune 14th (1st F) 20:04
